WASHINGTON—America’s Credit Unions President and CEO Jim Nussle plans to retire from the trade association, ACU announced.
ACU said Nussle did not specify an exact date for his retirement but rather expressed his desire to provide the ACU board the “full flexibility” to conduct a search for a CEO over the next several months on a timeline of their choosing, and to ensure his ongoing efforts to champion the organization’s advocacy agenda.
“Serving credit unions is a deep personal privilege. After a long career in advocacy from both sides of the policy making table, leading CUNA and the honor of helping to create and lead America’s Credit Unions, it is soon time for me to pursue new interests in retirement. My announcement today is intended to provide the board the time to conduct a thorough national search to find the next leader for the Association,” Nussle said.
“My full and ongoing focus will be on our intensive credit union advocacy efforts to protect our credit union model,” continued Nussle. “Credit Unions are the financial first responders in every community around the country, providing important access to financial services to enhance the financial wellbeing of our consumer members and advancing communities across the country including many that banks have abandoned.”
Nussle’s Career
Nussle was named president and CEO of the Credit Union National Association in September 2014, and then headed the organization when it merged with the National Association Of Federally Insured Credit Unions at the start of 2024.
Nussle, is a former eight-term congressman and director of the White House Office of Management and Budget.
Nussle served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991-2007 as a Republican representative from the State of Iowa. From 2001-2006, he served as chairman of the House Budget Committee, a key panel that oversees the federal budget process, including review of all bills and resolutions on the budget. In addition he was a member of the House leadership and served on the Banking and Ways and Means Committees.
“The America’s Credit Unions Board of Directors appreciates Jim’s leadership, the flexible succession timeline, and the ability to conduct a thorough national search. I believe strong candidates will emerge for consideration for this vital leadership role,” stated Pat Pierce, president/CEO of City and County Credit Union and chair of the America’s Credit Unions Board of Directors.
DCUC Wishes Nussle Well
Defense Credit Union Council President and CEO Anthony Hernandez reacted to the news.
"I wish Jim all the best in his future endeavors. He has an incredible record of achievement during his time at CUNA and then leading the merger with NAFCU. I appreciate working with him on issues important not only to defense credit unions but the entire industry," Hernandez stated.
ACU said the board has selected Vice Chair Karen Harbin, president/CEO of Commonwealth Credit Union, to lead a search committee and selection process and has selected Korn Ferry to assist the committee in conducting the national search.
