Dear NCOFCU Community,
In Washington, influence is rarely granted to those who speak alone. It is earned by coalitions that are coordinated, credible, and impossible to ignore. For the credit union movement—founded on cooperation—this principle is especially important.
That is why we want to share our perspective on the growing importance of collaboration between the National Council of Firefighter Credit Unions (NCOFCU), the Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC), and America’s Credit Unions (ACU).
NCOFCU represents a unique and deeply meaningful segment of our industry: credit unions serving first responders. These institutions support individuals who face extraordinary risks in their daily lives, and their financial needs reflect that reality. Ensuring their voice is heard in policy discussions is central to our mission.
At the same time, DCUC represents credit unions serving military members, veterans, and defense communities—another mission-driven segment with significant experience in Washington advocacy. Their work demonstrates how specialized credit union voices can effectively shape national policy.
America’s Credit Unions (ACU), as the national trade association, brings the scale, infrastructure, and access needed to engage policymakers at the highest levels. It serves as the central coordinating force for advocacy across the entire credit union system.
Each organization plays an important role on its own. Together, they have the potential to be far more impactful.
By aligning efforts, we combine depth, experience, and scale. NCOFCU brings firsthand insight into the needs of first responders. DCUC contributes a strong track record of effective advocacy on behalf of defense communities. America’s Credit Unions amplifies these perspectives into a unified national voice.
This collaboration is especially important given today’s policy environment. Credit unions are facing increasing regulatory pressure, ongoing debates around taxation and field of membership, and rising operational challenges. While these issues affect all credit unions, they often have a disproportionate impact on smaller, mission-focused institutions, such as those serving first responders and military communities.
When we work together, these concerns are not diluted; they are strengthened. They become part of a broader, more compelling case for policymakers to understand and act upon.
There is also a powerful human element. The stories of the members we serve, first responders, service members, and veterans, bring clarity and urgency to our advocacy. When these stories are included in coordinated national efforts, they help ensure that policy decisions reflect real-world impact.
Our path forward is clear: continued collaboration, shared priorities, and a unified presence in Washington.
This does not mean losing what makes each of us unique. On the contrary, it means strengthening our individual missions by aligning them within a broader, cooperative strategy—one that reflects the very foundation of the credit union movement.
We remain committed to ensuring that first responder credit unions are not just represented, but meaningfully included in the conversations that shape our future. https://www.ncofcu.org/advocacy
Thank you for your continued leadership and dedication to the communities you serve.
Sincerely,
National Council of Firefighter Credit Unions (NCOFCU)
